While at work, at the daycare, I asked one of my six year old after schooler to pick a book. She had a whole variety since we have a huge cart full of books. She choose the book "chicka chicka boom boom" by Bill Martin Jr. I have found that this book is a huge favorite of my students. She said she chose the book because her mom read it to her when she was a baby, and now she likes to read it to her mom and others. She feels comfortable will it since she knows it so well. She said she always likes it and never gets tired of it. She then read the book to me. After she read it I asked her why it is her favorite and what made her like it so much where her mom used to read it to her, and now when she reads it to others. She then states that she liked how it sounded (probably the rhyme) and that it was funny (letters chasing each other up a coconut tree). I can relate to her liking this book because I can also remember reading that book as a child.

A couple of weeks ago, I took my little 5 year old cousin to the dollar theatre to see Dr. Seuss’s "Horton Hears a Who". Before I took her, I decided to read the book first. We sat down and read aloud the book together (it took forever, but we got through it). She was so excited about going and seeing the movie, because she wanted to see what Katie looked like “in person” HA HA. I thought it was the cutest thing. Last week, I decided that I wanted to read with her again. I told her to choose another book; she wanted another Dr. Seuss book. She chose "Green Eggs and Ham". I started reading it at first, but she got the rhythm down and began to help me read. She chose the book because she said that she loved to picture of green eggs on the orange cover... lol. She loved all the places Sam went to see if the guy would eat green eggs and ham. She thought that it was so cool that the eggs were green. I had so much fun with these exciting books. Laurie, my little cousin, now loves reading with me.

Child: Timilyon
Age:3
Timilyon chose a picture book about poetry. The book was titled 'Lizards, Frogs, and Polliwogs' written and illustrated by Douglas Florian. When I asked him why he chose the book he told me it was because he liked the colors and the snakes. I then read the book aloud to him. He always asked questions such as 'Why does the frog have a tail?' or 'Why does the snake have a shoe on his head?'. He liked to comment on the pictures while I read him each poem. When I asked him what he liked about the book he said he liked the animals and the frogs. He said he liked that the frog was green and had big red eyes. When I asked him why, he said because it was a tree frog and was on the show Deigo. He liked that it looked like the tree frog that plays Deigo's friend. He really liked the alligator and that the box turtle was illustrated with wheels on it's shell.

This past weekend I went over to my grondmother's house to visit my 7 year old cousin. She will be entering the 3rd grade in the fall and she is a very good reader. My grandma always has books at her house for her so I told her to go pick one out. She picked out this book called Turtle's Race with Beaver written by Joseph and James Bruchac. After we read the book together I asked her what she loked about it the most and she told me that it made her laugh and she liked the pictures. I tried to dig deeper and ask more questions but it was lunch time and she was more interested in eating.

I asked my friend Katie if I could read to her 3 year old daughter, Emma. I had some books picked out for her to choose from. The one she picked out for me to read to her was called "Dog Breath, The Horrible Trouble With Hally Tosis." She picked this book because of the picture of the dog on the cover. It didn't surprise me that she picked this book because Emma LOVES dogs. Every time she comes over she chases my dog around the house. She liked the book a lot. She laughed at all the funny pictures of the dog's breath causing people to fall over. She also liked that Hally Tosis' bad breath saved the day! I also thought this book was very funny. For example, when the kids are trying to find a way to cure Hally's breath, they take her to see a breath-taking view.

My boyfriend Tim has a four-year-old brother named Jude. He is very interested in Thomas the Train, so even though I picked out other books from various genres, he honed in on the Thomas book immediately. I had Thomas and the freight train. Jude loves trains, but especially Thomas. So when I asked him why he chose this book, he said because he loves Thomas. There's something about trains that just captivates him. Being so young, I don't think he completely understands why he loves them so much. Still, he really enjoyed me reading the book to him, and he especially loved the pictures of Thomas and the farm animals included in the book. I kind of did this to myself because I knew he liked Thomas the Train, but I wanted to see if he would still choose it over other books. It seems like he's still a fan until the end.

I had several books laid out on the couch and asked my 3 year old daughter, Natalie, to choose one for me to read to her. She picked "The Pink House". She loves the color pink almost as much as I do and once I read the title she didn't even consider the rest. She loved the lively illustrations and funny names, like Uncle Pook. It's about a family vacation, so we talked about what we would do if we had our own pink house to go to. Who would come with us and what would everyone bring? She named off at least 20 people and all the essentials, like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and floaties. We had a lot of fun reading and discussing this cute picture book.

My 4 year old son Mason chose Monster Goose by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Jack E. Davis. He picked this from his entire collection of books and the books we have from the library. He chose the book because he liked the picture on the cover. I read the book to him. He said he liked it because "it had cool creatures." He didn't say this, but I think he liked that the poems were short and there were small words that he could read himself. He especially liked the word 'guts'.
